DIY Headache Balm
This DIY headache balm is soothing and lovely to use. Be sure to use it alongside your other tools and resources that support your body through whatever process it’s currently moving through.
That might include balancing your brain with the Cortices technique, hydrating well with filtered water and Celtic salt, lying on your back with your legs and feet up the wall (so restful), spending time in nature, or walking barefoot on the earth.
Instructions
Prepare your containers
Prepare the containers you’ll use to store your balm. Choose what works for you — many people prefer small containers with lids as they’re easy to carry in a bag.
Melt the oil and beeswax
Once your containers are ready, it’s time to melt the oil and beeswax.
Add water to the bottom half of your double boiler (making sure it doesn’t touch the top pan) and turn the stove to medium-low heat.
Measure:
¼ cup sweet almond oil
¼ cup coconut oil
2 tablespoons beeswax
Add these to the top half of your double boiler.
As soon as the mixture begins to melt, stir frequently so it melts evenly without scorching.
Remove the double boiler from the heat and allow the balm base to cool slightly (but not harden).
Add essential oils
Once the mixture has cooled slightly, add your essential oils. You can tailor this to your preferences.
I recommend:
15 drops frankincense
15 drops peppermint
10 drops spearmint
10 drops lavender
10 drops basil
Stir gently and carefully — most essential oils are very runny.
Fill your containers
Pour the headache balm into your prepared containers, filling each one just below the top of the jar. Repeat until all containers are filled.
Cool Your Headache Balm
Allow the balm to cool completely.
For small half-ounce containers this usually takes 30–45 minutes. Larger containers may take longer.
To check if they’re fully cooled, gently touch the bottom centre of each jar. Once cool, place the lids on — they’re ready to use.
Tip:
While filling containers, keep the heat on very low. The balm can set quickly, and you may need to gently warm it again for a few minutes to soften the mixture.
Gentle safety note
Essential oils are powerful and can affect people differently. If you have sensitive skin, are pregnant, or are making this balm for children, consider reducing the amount of essential oils used.
Always perform a small patch test on the inside of your arm before first use. Discontinue use if any irritation occurs.
This balm is intended as a gentle, supportive home remedy and is not a substitute for professional medical care. If headaches are persistent, severe, or worsening, please seek appropriate medical advice.
Using Headache Balm
Apply a small amount to the back of the neck or any area of muscle tension and massage in fully.
At the first sign of a headache, gently rub the balm into the temples and along the hairline.
What types of headaches is this balm good for?
This home remedy can be used for mild headaches of many types, including:
Tension headaches
Sinus headaches
Allergy-related headaches
Benefits of the base ingredients?
Balms are an effective way to apply essential oils to the body.
Not only do you receive the benefits of the oils themselves, but the base ingredients help them stay on the skin longer than essential oils applied directly. Beeswax, in particular, helps the balm stay in place far longer than a roller bottle
I hope you enjoyed this DIY remedy— I’d love to hear how you go with it.
Till next time friends,
