Your Body's Innate Wisdom: Understanding How a BodyTalk Session Works

Your Body Knows More Than You Think
Have you ever stopped to consider just how much your body does for you without you having to consciously think about it?
Your heart beats, your lungs breathe, your food and experiences get digested, and countless processes take place every second to keep you functioning.
If you cut your finger, you don't need to instruct your body to begin repairing the wound. It already knows what to do. An intricate series of processes begins almost immediately, with different cells and systems working together to protect and repair the damaged tissue.
And that's just one example.
Your body is constantly monitoring, adapting, responding and working to maintain balance, often without you even being aware of it.
Within BodyTalk, we recognise this extraordinary capacity as an expression of something we call innate wisdom.
It's a concept that sits at the very heart of how I work with both people and animals, and understanding it can completely change the way you look at your health and wellbeing.
What Is Innate Wisdom?
I often use the analogy of an orchestra when explaining innate wisdom.
Imagine an orchestra filled with talented musicians, each playing a different instrument. Individually, they may be wonderful musicians, but for the orchestra to create beautiful music, they need to be in tune with one another, playing at the right time and working together harmoniously.
That's where the conductor comes in.
Our bodies are much the same.
We have countless cells, organs and systems, each with their own important roles. But none of them works in isolation. They are constantly communicating, exchanging information and coordinating their activities.
You could think of your innate wisdom as the conductor of this extraordinary orchestra.
Within the BodyTalk philosophy, innate wisdom refers to the body's inherent intelligence and its ability to coordinate, adapt and maintain balance throughout the whole bodymind.
And when I say bodymind, I'm recognising that we're much more than a collection of physical parts. Our thoughts, emotions, experiences, beliefs and consciousness are all interconnected aspects of who we are.
When communication and coordination between these different aspects become disrupted, the orchestra may no longer be playing quite so harmoniously.
This is one of the fundamental principles behind BodyTalk: supporting communication and balance within the bodymind, while respecting its own innate wisdom.

How Does Innate Wisdom Guide a BodyTalk Session?
One of the things I love most about BodyTalk is that I don't need to decide in advance what your body needs or where we should begin.
You might come to a session wanting support with physical discomfort, emotional stress, fatigue or a particular challenge in your life. While understanding your concerns is important, they don't necessarily determine where the session will take us.
Instead, I work with your body's innate wisdom using the BodyTalk protocol, a structured system of questions and neuromuscular biofeedback that helps identify which areas of the bodymind are priorities for balancing at that particular time.
Sometimes those priorities seem directly connected to the reason you've booked your session. Other times, they may lead us somewhere quite unexpected.
That's because BodyTalk takes a whole-person approach, recognising that physical, emotional, mental and environmental influences are interconnected.
Once a priority has been identified, we use a gentle tapping technique involving the head, sternum and navel.
Within the BodyTalk system, this tapping process is used to support communication between the head brain, heart brain and gut brain complexes, helping the bodymind recognise and integrate the changes being addressed.
Rather than imposing a predetermined treatment plan, the session unfolds according to the priorities identified through the protocol, with your innate wisdom guiding the process.
Why No Two Sessions Are Alike
One of the fascinating things about BodyTalk is that no two sessions are ever quite the same, even when two people come to me with seemingly identical concerns.
Imagine two people experiencing ongoing headaches. While their symptoms may be similar, their life experiences, emotional responses, stress levels, beliefs, relationships and environments could be completely different.
Within the BodyTalk approach, all of these factors may be relevant.
For one person, the session might identify priorities involving physical structures or physiological processes. For another, the priorities might involve emotional experiences, long-established patterns or something seemingly unrelated to their headaches.
Even when working with the same person over several sessions, the priorities can change as their bodymind responds and adapts.
This is why I don't follow a standard treatment formula based solely on someone's symptoms.
Each session is an opportunity to explore what your innate wisdom identifies as important at that particular moment, recognising that your needs, experiences and circumstances are uniquely yours.

What Happens After a Session?
A BodyTalk session doesn't necessarily end when our appointment finishes.
Within the BodyTalk approach, we understand that the bodymind may continue responding, adjusting and integrating following a session, guided by its own innate wisdom.
Some people notice changes almost immediately. They might experience a sense of calm, greater clarity, improved comfort or a shift in how they're feeling emotionally.
For others, the changes may be more subtle or become noticeable over the following days and weeks.
You might find yourself responding differently to situations that previously caused stress, sleeping more comfortably, feeling less emotionally reactive or simply noticing that something which once bothered you doesn't seem quite so significant anymore.
And sometimes, you may not consciously notice anything at all.
One thing I always remind my clients is that the intensity or speed of what you experience after a session isn't a measure of how effective that session has been.
Everyone is different, and your bodymind has its own way of responding.
Rather than searching for particular signs or trying to force an outcome, I encourage you to be curious, observe any changes and give yourself the space to integrate the experience.
I've also created an After Session Guidelines handout, to help you understand what you might notice following a session and how you can support yourself during that time.
What About Animals?
In my experience, animals often respond beautifully to BodyTalk sessions and seem to genuinely enjoy the process.
Something I've observed over many years of working with both people and animals is that animals sometimes appear to require fewer sessions than people when addressing similar concerns.
One possible explanation is that animals simply don't hold the same layers of conditioning, complex belief systems and mental narratives that we humans develop throughout our lives.
As humans, we can become deeply attached to our beliefs, habits, identities and ways of responding to the world. Even when we consciously desire change, these established patterns can sometimes make it challenging to move forward.
Animals, on the other hand, often seem much more willing to simply respond to what's happening in the present moment. They don't appear to analyse or question the process in quite the same way we do.
I often think of it this way: animals have a deep desire to be well, and they seem remarkably good at getting out of their own way and allowing that process to unfold.
Of course, every animal is an individual, with their own experiences, learned behaviours, relationships and environmental influences. These are all important considerations when working with their innate wisdom during a BodyTalk session.

Working With Your Body, Rather Than Against It
One of the things I'm most passionate about is helping people develop a greater understanding of their own bodies and recognise the extraordinary intelligence they already possess.
We can become so accustomed to looking outside ourselves for answers that we sometimes forget just how much is happening within us every moment of every day.
Our bodies are constantly communicating, adapting and responding to the world around us. And while we may not always understand why something is happening, there is enormous value in becoming more curious about what our bodies are telling us.
For me, BodyTalk is about working with that innate wisdom, rather than trying to override it or force the body to respond in a particular way.
It's also about recognising that we have an active role to play in our own wellbeing. The choices we make, the environments we live in, our relationships, our thoughts and the way we respond to life's challenges all contribute to our overall experience of health.
My hope is that through our work together, you begin to develop a deeper connection with your own bodymind, greater confidence in understanding your needs, and a more active role in your own healthcare journey.
Because sometimes, supporting our health begins with recognising the wisdom that's been there all along.
